Some Basic Principles

I hope you’re all having a lovely summer! I’ve enjoyed some well deserved time off, and have even had time to pursue other artistic endeavours (check out my instagram!). One thing I really enjoy doing in the summer is reading – something I almost never have time for during the school year!

Today I dug out “Basic Principles In Pianoforte Playing” by Josef Lhevinne and polished it off in a couple hours. This book startled me in how closly it aligned with my own mentors pedagogy, considering it was written in 1924 (Shock and awe!). Reading the phrase “float the arm” brought back so many memories of my childhood (both good and bad)! Despite the book being 90 years old, the pedagogy it discusses is still solid. I loved the discussion of how legato touch should have notes that float together with the same tonal colour. It is compared to a string of beads, and all too often the legato touch of students is multicoloured, multi-sized beads (different depths of the key, different attacks of the finger), instead of a straight wash of colour that reaches to the bottom of the keys.

It also touched on some good basics that should always be remembered when playing: let the arm float, strike each note to the bottom of the key, and keep your fingers on the surface of the key. (On that last point – keeping the fingers on the surface of the key isn’t a hard and fast rule, but is meant to facilitate a quiet hand and high arch in the palm! I haven’t read it phrased as ‘keeping your fingers on the surface of the key’ in any modern pedadgogy books, as it most likely gets interpreted with tension.)

Another important distinction I appreciate being mentioned is how one grasps the key when they play, as opposed to striking it. Striking the key produces a harsh, angry sound. It is far better to “imagine you are actually playing upon the wires, ringing them with soft felt covered hammers and not with hard metal bars.” (Lhevinne 21)

Finally, I found a fun new way to practice scales (aren’t they already fun, though? ha!). Play the scale as usual, starting on the thumb (Degree 1) and ending on the pinky. Now, playing the same scale, but start on the second note (Degree 2), ending on the second note. Now start on the third note (Degree 3), and end on the 3rd note. And so on….! Not only are you getting your brain to work a little harder, you are actually playing through all the scale modes – and don’t forget: I Don’t Particularily Like Modes A Lot! (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Locrian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Lydian).

The phrase that stuck with me the most though, was this: “Try practicing for beauty as well as practicing for technic. Technic is worthless in your playing, if it means nothing more to you than making machines of your hands.” (Lhevinne 39).
We play piano to create beauty and express our souls. Sometimes this gets lost in the learning of notes/technique/phrasing and shaping, but in the end, self-expression and beauty are our goals.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a fantastic break, and is ready to start another semester of lessons.

The Kiwanis festival deadline is February 10th, and performances are the last week of April. I strongly encourage students who are planning to do an RCM exam in June to compete in the Kiwanis festival; it is a great opportunity to receive feedback in an adjudicated performance setting. For those students not doing an exam, it gives them something to work towards close to the end of school year. Students must be in Royal Conservatory levelled books in order to participate.

There will be no lessons on Thursday Feb 8, as my daughter is having surgery. Lessons to make up these missed classes will be offered over spring break.

Sunday Feb 11, and Monday Feb 12, are stat holidays, so enjoy the time off – there will be no lessons!

Our 4th Annual Pancake Party will be held on March 17th from 10-12 AM. You will receive another email closer to the date outlining the details of this fun event!

Lessons to make up missed classes will be offered during spring break; days available are: Tuesday, March 20th, and Friday, March 30th. Times available are still TBD.

Warmly,

Jessica

Winter Upcoming Events 2017

If you can believe it, we are on the final stretch to Christmas! There will be two Christmas Recitals again this year: December 9th (Saturday) at 3:00 and 4:00 pm, at St. Andrews Anglican Church at 4619 Lakeshore Road. Students will be randomly divided between the two recitals; if you have a preference for time, please let me know, as I can easily accommodate you!
This recital is more formal, so students are asked to wear ‘nice’ clothing (no jeans/rips/tears), and memorization of pieces to be performed is expected.

Also upcoming is the Canada Music Week Concert – November 12th at 1:00 pm, at the Rotary Centre. Students who have won the composing contest will be performing their pieces, alongside other students of the music school who have prepared music by Canadian composers. If you are interested in hearing what Canada has to offer the classical world, I recommend you check it out!

Christmas Ensembles will be December 18-21st, in the Performance Studio at the music school. This ensemble classes take the place of your regularly scheduled lesson that week; sign up sheets to choose your preferred time and day will be up at the beginning of December. All piano students will be taking part in the ensemble classes. Unfortunately, there are no voice ensemble classes yet, so voice students will still have a lesson that week! There may be some rescheduling to do with those lessons as I teach the ensemble classes as well, so I will keep in touch regarding the last week of lessons before Christmas break!

Christmas Break: December 23-January 7th! Sunday students will end lessons on December 10th (because Dec.17 will be spent at Christmas ensembles!), and will resume January 7th – the last day of holidays.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns; my number is 250-575-7530, and my email is musickelowna@gmail.com.

Warm wishes to everyone as you start to get into the Christmas spirit!

Winter Newsletter 2017

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas break! Here are a few things to keep in mind as we move into the new year:

3rd Annual Pancake Party

Our 3rd Annual Pancake Party will take place on March 18th, from 10 am-12pm. This is a VERY casual recital, in which students participate in a short recital (no memorization required), eat some delicious pancakes, and then play games! Pyjamas are welcome :). While this party is for students only, I will be recruiting some parents to help me manage the chaos. If you are interested, please let me know!

Kiwanis

This Kiwanis Festival Registration is now open! Students wishing to compete can go online to kelownakiwanisfestival.com and register. Piano competitions run from April 23rd-28th. For those not interested in competing but are curious about the event, all competitions are open to the public, and I encourage you to go listen!

RCM Exams

Students planning on doing Royal Conservatory exams must register online at rcmusic.ca by March 7th. I strongly recommend students take an exam at least every two years, in order to make sure benchmarks are met. For older students, completing Grade 6-9 Piano and their co-requisite theory classes will provide high school accreditation for Arts Grades 10-12.

Online Portal

Don’t forget! Newsletters are available in electronic form via the online student portal, which you can access at musickelowna.com.
If you do not have any login information for said portal, please let me know! It is a great way to stay up to date with studio events.

Make Up Lesson Day
Feb. 13th, 10am-12pm

This is a make-up lesson day for classes I missed due to sickness in December. Time slots will be available in 30 minute increments starting at 10:00 am, with the last one available at 2:30 pm.
There will be a sign up sheet in my studio; parents/students are welcome to sign up in person or shoot me a quick text or email to reserve a time.

Last Minute Reminder!

Don’t forget – this Saturday, October 29th, is our Halloween Recital! It is located at the music school, in the performance studio, and will start at 1:00 pm sharp!
I look forward to seeing everyone and their costumes there!

New certification!

I am proud to announce I am now an Advanced Specialist in Piano and an Intermediate Specialist in Theory through the Royal Conservatory of Music!

If you are interested in finding out more about what this certification means, feel free to contact me!

Year End Concert and Fall Updates

Our year end concert will be held on June 11th, 2016, at 11:00 am at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Students are expected to have their pieces memorized and polished, and to come dressed semi-formally (nice dresses, pants, and shirts). Prizes will be given out for the 100 Days of Practice award, and the Grand Prizes for finishing the Mario Race!

Year End Recital: June 11th, 11:00 am, KAG

Final Day of Lessons: June 24th, 2016

Fall Pre-Registration Forms

Fall pre-registration forms will be going out this week to all students; you may also download the form below and return to me via email or in person. Please fill these out and return no later than May 2nd, 2016. These forms will reserve your lesson time and day for the fall, and will help me to organize my studio so those students wishing to change times can do so. Lessons will run from September 19th – June 23rd next year, and I will not be cutting down any days of teaching during the week. Some of my morning students I may be asking to move later in the day/to a different day so my schedule works better with managing a new baby, so I thank you for your help and understanding!
Payment of registration and fees begins in June at the office, and there will be prizes and draws again this year for early registration!.

Pancake Party

March 12th, 10:00 am-12:00 noon, KCMS Performance Studio

Our 3rd annual Pancake Party is quickly approaching! This is a fun, student only recital to break up the mid-semester doldrums, and start spring break on a fun note! Each student will be required to perform one song (memorization is not necessary) for their peers in a short recital. We will follow the recital with some delicious pancakes, fruit salad, and games! Students may wear their pajamas, and bring a bear/pillow/blanket, as we usually sit on the floor. If students have some fun games they would like to bring, it is always fun to have some variety! I usually bring Twister, Jenga, and Cranium.
Also, if each student could bring one piece of fruit, that would be great – we will be making a large fruit salad to share as well!
I will be asking parents directly if they would like to volunteer as chaperones for the party; if you know you want to lend a hand, give me a call, text, or email!

Spring Break

Spring break this year is March 12th-28th, with lessons resuming as regularly scheduled on March 29th. Spring Break and Easter run into each other this year, so there will be no long weekend in April, but there will be an extra day of break on March 28th!
I will be making up the lessons I missed for accompanying over Spring Break; I will be contacting each student/parent directly to pick a time that works best for them. If you know you will be away over spring break and would like some lessons made up before then, please contact me directly, as I will be offering make-up classes on Sundays until Spring Break. All students I missed on February 17th have already been credited their lessons, and do not need to have them made up!
